Welcome to

a small look at Family life in

Mozambique

UNICEF reports that

In 2004 it was estimated that the total number of deaths among children under the age of five was 117,000, this is about 320 child deaths every day.

The children you see here with their mothers are very lucky, their is an estimated 1.6 Million orphans in Mozambique, more than 380,000 have lost one or both parents to AIDS-related illnesses. The number of orphaned children is expected to rise to 1,626,000 by the year 2010.

It has been published in recent years that In rural areas where these women and children live that 63% of Mozambican children live in absolute poverty.

Children mortality rates in Mozambique remain high with about one in every six children dying before he or she reaches the age of five, that means 2 of the children shown on this web page could be dead before they reach the age of five.

Malaria and acute respiratory infection are the two major immediate causes of mortality among young children, with AIDS emerging as a major killer. Malnutrition is a significant underlying cause of child mortality.

One of the most important factors affecting women's health is good nutrition, The most critical factor affecting women's nutrition is their workload - women especially in rural areas consistently work long, hard hours and their energy intake is not commensurate with their work output. About 9% of women suffer from malnutrition.

HIV and AIDS

By 2006, over 1.6 million Mozambicans where estimated to live with HIV or AIDS - 58 percent where women and 5 percent where children under five. AIDS is fast becoming the major cause of mortality among children, with an estimated 20,000 children under five dying from AIDS related illnesses.
